If you have even the slightest interest in interior design and have never visited Isabella & Max Rooms, you have truly been missing out. For those of us who can’t get enough of designer Janell Beals’ ideas, the arrival of her new online magazine, House of Fifty, is eagerly awaited.
With just 4 more weeks until House of Fifty launches, I caught up with Janell to ask her about the project.
What made you decide to launch an E-magazine?
More and more I found I had an interest in covering topics beyond interiors on my blog and initially decided to write a newsletter. Once I began talking to people about the newsletter I realized that an e-zine would be better suited for the vision I had, and would offer the opportunity to collaborate with a number of people.
Deciding to take the plunge to commit to developing House of Fifty was the response to being passed over for an opportunity due to my age. I will be turning 50 this June, and feel I have more than ever to offer, but this belief apparently was not shared by the powers that be. Instead of letting the situation get me down, I decided to create my own future and developing an e-zine seemed like the perfect fit. I had been wanting to expand on the topics covered through my blog and this is a great venue to do so.
The name is inspired by a point I’m reaching in my own life. But the e-zine is not about age, it is about embracing potential at all points in our lives…living a full life. The name House of Fifty is meant to convey a “full house”, a house and life that is full of ideas and potential.
How is House of Fifty different from other online content?
House of Fifty will focus on covering the key aspects of a woman’s daily life. Some of the topics covered in the first issue include ideas for creating beautiful spaces, favorite fashion essentials, organizational tips, how to combine fitness and friendship, an interview with a working mother, books we love, and beauty tips. All of that combines for a “Full House” … Our hope is to offer tips and insight as we strive to live our best lives, finding inspiration in the everyday.
What have you enjoyed most about working on the first issue?
Writing a blog and articles for other publications can be a solitary role, while working on the e-zine has been a wonderful collaboration between myself and all the contributors. I had been wanting to have more of this aspect in my work life and it has really been a great shift which I’m truly enjoying.
What does your family think of the venture?
They are supportive and I have looked for fun ways to involve them. I am working with a beauty editor on an article that includes nail polish, so Isabella is casting her vote on what colors to feature, and testing them out beforehand of course. She has enjoyed this! Both Isabella and Max suggested their favorite books to be included in a book review, while my husband, with a background in journalism, has a look at every article before it gets sent off to receive it’s layout. So it is in many ways a family affair!
Thank you, Janell! If you have sharp eyes, you will see that I’m thrilled to be one of the contributors to the first issue, sharing some organizing ideas. House of Fifty will be published quarterly and you can sign up here to receive the first issue.
